Identifying Mold in Your Home: Key Areas to Inspect in Southmoor Homes?

10/15/2024 (Permalink)

A person discovers a mold outbreak in their home. We are trained and certified to restore mold damage in Cook County.

Our local Orland Park team is a trusted leader in mold damage restoration services in Southmoor. As a homeowner, you play a crucial role in detecting mold before it causes significant damage to your home. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) advises proactive searches for mold in areas prone to moisture. To effectively identify mold, inspect areas with a damp or moldy smell, such as basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.

HUD recommends that you stay vigilant and look for water stains and colored or fuzzy growth on ceilings, walls, floors, windowsills, and around pipes. These can be clear indicators of mold presence. If you notice a musty odor, you must check behind and underneath materials like carpeting, furniture, or stored items where mold might be growing unnoticed.

Addressing moisture issues promptly is of utmost importance in preventing mold growth. In addition to visual inspections, pay attention to any standing water or damp spots, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Moisture problems can quickly lead to mold growth if not addressed. By conducting regular inspections and addressing moisture issues promptly, homeowners can prevent mold from causing extensive damage to their property.

Water Heater Catastrophe: Preventing Major Damage in Your Palos Heights Home?

9/30/2024 (Permalink)

A leaking water heater is shown. We are water damage restoration leaders in Cook County.

Our local team in Orland Park responds to water damage emergencies in Palos Heights every year. Water heaters are essential appliances but can cause significant property damage when they fail.

Over time, water heaters can develop issues such as rust, sediment buildup, or faulty pressure relief valves. These problems can lead to leaks or even catastrophic tank bursts. A leaking water heater can release hundreds of gallons of water into your home, flooding basements, damaging flooring, and causing mold growth in walls and insulation. In more severe cases, a sudden rupture can lead to extensive structural damage and require costly repairs.

Routine upkeep, such as flushing the tank to clear out sediment, inspecting the pressure relief valve, and checking for rust or corrosion, can help avoid these failures.

If your water heater is over ten years old, consider a replacement to prevent the risk of a significant leak or burst. Being proactive about water heater maintenance can protect your home from unexpected water damage, saving you from expensive and stressful repairs.

Our local Orland Park team restores flood damage in Oak Forest every year. The Illinois Big Flood refers to a series of devastating floods that occurred in Illinois, particularly in the summer of 1993. 4. Levee Failures: One of the most significant aspects of the Illinois Big Flood was the failure of levees, which were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of water. T

Top Causes of Residential Fire Damage in Orland Park?

9/17/2024 (Permalink)

A kitchen is on fire. We are trained and certified to restore storm damage in Chicago.

Our local Orland Park team is a storm damage restoration leader. Residential fires remain a significant concern across the United States, with various causes contributing to devastating property damage. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the leading causes of residential fires are cooking, heating equipment, electrical issues, and smoking materials.

Cooking fires top the list, often resulting from unattended cooking or overheating oil. Grease fires can spread quickly, causing extensive damage. Heating equipment, including space heaters and fireplaces, poses a significant risk, especially during colder months. Improper use of space heaters, such as placing them too close to flammable objects, often leads to fires.

Electrical malfunctions are another common cause, with outdated wiring, overloaded circuits, and faulty appliances being the primary culprits. The NFPA notes that homes with older electrical systems are particularly vulnerable.

Finally, smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are a leading cause of fire deaths in homes. Improper disposal of cigarettes or falling asleep while smoking can result in deadly fires.

Understanding these common causes and taking preventive measures, like never leaving cooking unattended and ensuring proper maintenance of heating and electrical systems, can significantly reduce the risk of fire damage in homes.

Indoor Lightning Safety: Protecting Yourself During a Storm in Palos Park?

9/10/2024 (Permalink)

Lightning fills the night sky. We are storm damage restoration leaders in Chicago.

Our local Orland Park team restores storm damage in Palos Park every year. When a thunderstorm rolls in, it is essential to take precautions indoors to protect yourself from lightning strikes. Although indoors is generally safer than outside, lightning can still pose serious risks if proper safety measures are not followed.

First, avoid using corded phones or electrical appliances, as lightning can travel through electrical wiring and cause shocks or fires. Unplugging sensitive electronics like computers and televisions is also advisable to prevent damage from power surges. If possible, avoid contact with plumbing, including sinks, faucets, and showers, as lightning can travel through metal pipes and water.

Lightning can enter through cracks or travel through the structure of your home so stay away from windows and exterior doors. It’s also wise to avoid concrete walls and floors, as they often contain metal bars or wires that can conduct electricity.

Also, if you have pets, ensure they stay indoors and away from exterior doors or windows. Following these indoor lightning safety tips can significantly reduce the risk of injury or damage during a thunderstorm, ensuring that you and your loved ones remain safe until the storm passes.

Ice Maker Malfunction Cause of Water Damage in Southmoor Home?

9/3/2024 (Permalink)

A refrigerator with an indoor ice maker is shown. We restore water damage 24/7 in Chicago.

Our local team in Orland Park responds to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in Southmoor. Refrigerator ice makers are a modern convenience, but when they malfunction, they can cause significant water damage. These issues can start subtly but quickly escalate, leading to significant problems if not addressed promptly.

Trouble usually begins when the ice maker's water line leaks or becomes disconnected. Even a tiny drip can accumulate over time, seeping into flooring and walls and potentially causing mold growth and structural damage. The water supply line can sometimes burst, resulting in a sudden and severe flood.

Homeowners can take proactive steps to prevent such disasters. Regularly inspecting the water line for signs of wear and tear is crucial. Look for kinks, leaks, or corrosion in the line, and ensure that connections are secure. A water leak detector near your refrigerator can be a lifesaver, alerting you to moisture issues right away and allowing you to act promptly.

Additionally, it's wise to familiarize yourself with the water shut-off valve for the refrigerator. Knowing how to quickly turn off the water supply can be a game-changer, minimizing potential damage if a leak occurs.

Severe Summer Storm Causes Flooding in Oak Forest Homes?

8/27/2024 (Permalink)

Thunderclouds fill the summer sky. We restore storm damage in Bremen Township 24/7.

Our local team in Orland Park is a trusted leader in storm damage cleanup and restoration services. Summer thunderstorms in Oak Forest, Illinois, can be breathtaking and dangerous. While the dramatic display of lightning and rolling thunder might be awe-inspiring, these storms often pose significant risks to homeowners and businesses. Powerful winds, intense rainfall, and hailstorms can lead to significant property damage, leaving homeowners facing a challenging and overwhelming recovery process.

The powerful winds associated with summer thunderstorms can uproot trees, damage roofs, and send debris flying into windows and walls. In Oak Forest, the dense population of trees means that fallen branches and even entire trees are familiar sights after a storm. This can lead to blocked roads, damaged vehicles, and significant damage to homes.

Intense rainfall can result in flash flooding, particularly in areas with lower elevation. Floodwater may seep into basements, causing water damage that demands prompt attention to avoid mold growth and structural issues. Hail can also batter siding, shatter windows, and dent vehicles, leaving behind costly repairs.

Residents must remain vigilant during the summer storm season and take precautions to protect their properties. Regular property maintenance, like clearing rain gutters and trimming branches can mitigate some risks.

Clogged Lint Trap Leads to Dryer Fire in Orland Park Home?

8/20/2024 (Permalink)

A clogged lint trap is shown. We are fire damage restoration leaders in Cook and Will Counties.

Our local team in Orland Park is trained and certified to restore fire damage. A clogged lint trap is not just a minor inconvenience, it's a serious fire hazard with potentially devastating consequences.

The lint trap in your dryer is designed to capture fibers from your clothing during the drying cycle. However, over time, lint accumulates and can become a significant fire risk if not properly maintained. The urgency of this issue cannot be overstated.

When the lint trap becomes clogged, it restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat. This excessive heat can ignite the accumulated lint, resulting in a potentially catastrophic fire. The United States Fire Administration (USFA) reports that dryer fires cause thousands of injuries and millions of dollars in yearly property damage.

Regular maintenance is key to preventing dryer fires. First, clean the lint trap before every load of laundry. After each cleaning, check the trap for any remaining lint that might be stuck in the mesh. Inspecting and cleaning the dryer vent and ductwork at least once a year ensures proper airflow. You can significantly reduce the fire risk and keep your home safe by staying vigilant and maintaining your dryer.

Tips for Responding to a Flood | SERVPRO of Orland Park

5/21/2024 (Permalink)

Home immersed in water from flood If your home has been hit by an unexpected flash flood, SERVPRO of Orland Park is here to help. Call us today!

Flooding situations can develop in seconds, leaving you with very little time to react and save your possessions from damage. They can occur when a strong storm brings heavy rain to the community, or they can occur from something unsuspecting like a busted water line that gushes everywhere.

Now matter how it happens, a lot of water can flow into your home in a short amount of time. This is why preparations should happen now before the situation even develops!  Being prepared now can help you mitigate damage and stay in control when a true flood emergency begins.

What to Do About a Flash Flood

Flash flood warnings can be issued alongside any strong storm that has the potential to overwhelm our area with rain. Warnings can even be issued before it starts raining if the forecast is solid enough.

In order to be prepared for flash flooding conditions, you need to keep your property neat and tidy. Keep clutter to a minimum, and trim trees and branches regularly to reduce the hazards around your home.

You should also have your emergency kit prepped and ready to go. Include whatever your family would need to stay safe and comfortable, and be sure to pack extra drinking water, as floods can sometimes compromise the city water supply temporarily.

If the water does start flowing into your home or pouring into your basement, stay calm and stay above the water line. Eventually the rain will stop and the water will stop rushing in.

Manmade Flood Conditions

These types of situations are harder to predict, as no one ever assumes that a water line or an old appliance will malfunction or break and lead to serious water issues in your home.

Check these spaces as often as you can for signs of wear and tear or for any new drips or puddles. Addressing preventive maintenance can reduce your risk for a manmade flood.

However, if the unexpected happens and you are left with a basement full of water or water is now raining down from your ceiling, locate the appropriate water valve and shut off the flow of water as quickly as you can.

If you aren’t 100% sure that the water that is now all over your floor is safe to handle, avoid walking through it or touching it. Gray water and even black water is flowing through your home as well, and this type of water is dangerous to handle. Stay out of the area, and call us instead.

Drying Up the Excess Water

No matter how it happens, floodwater should be addressed quickly. The longer it sits in your home, the more dangerous it can become and more damage could occur as a result of the lingering moisture. Structural integrity issues could make your home dangerous to reside in or a mold infestation could take hold and impact your air quality.

We will get right to work removing the excess water and we will dry out your entire space with our air movers and blowers. Once dry, we will be able to quickly tackle repairs.

Floods can soak carpets and upholstery, but they can also ruin floorboards, walls and ceilings. Our team is trained to handle your entire restoration from start to finish, so let us help you recover right away if you suffer a flood at home.

Taking Control of a Leaky Dishwasher | SERVPRO of Orland Park

2/21/2024 (Permalink)

strong mildew in large stains is located on white interior wall in home Home water damage happens when least expected. Call SERVPRO of Orland Park today. We want to help!

We all rely on our appliances and high-tech homes to help us get through our busy days. While we are running around in the morning making breakfast, getting dressed and feeding the dog, throwing a dish pod into the dishwasher and hitting “start” is probably something you do on autopilot.

But what happens when you come home after a long day and discover that your dishwasher leaked all over your brand-new hardwood floors? You call SERVPRO®, of course!

Our water damage restoration team will jump into action to help you take control of the situation and to help you with any necessary repairs.

The Effects of Leaking Water

Water has the potential to leak everywhere in your home. Once it starts flowing, it can get into every crack and crevice possible, which can be really troublesome when it comes to the cleanup. If water gets behind your walls, under your floors or behind your trim, it can be really hard to get at on your own.

Once it gets back there, it can truly be impossible to dry out on your own without the assistance of professional equipment or some major construction. Over time, mold can start to grow, eventually taking hold and spreading all over your room, or the lingering moisture can compromise important structural components of your home. Taking action quickly is vital for the health and safety of your home.

Your Initial Reaction

Your first reaction will probably be a mixture of surprise and shock as you walk into the room and your socks become immediately soaked. Try to stay calm and locate your main water valve. This valve is normally located in the back of the machine or is coming out of the cupboard underneath your sink.

Flip it off, and consider unplugging the appliance as well. You don’t want it to accidentally start back up and pour the remaining water in the pipes all over your floor once more! After the situation is mildly under control, pick up the phone and give us a call so we can get started.

Why Professional Restoration Matters

While we are all capable of pulling out a fan or opening a window to help the area dry out, that may not be enough. Like we mentioned earlier, any water that gets to a place that you can’t easily reach can lead to some pretty serious consequences

Our team will be able to assist you best by setting up our powerful air movers and blowers, and we even have professional equipment that allows us to detect hidden moisture behind your walls.

We will work hard to dry up all of the water, and we can also ensure any repairs are handled quickly as well. Water is notorious for swelling and warping floors, ruining carpet and causing soggy walls or ceilings. We will ensure your entire affected area is clean, sanitized and repaired to your satisfaction.

Has your home suffered water damage? Call SERVPRO of Orland Park for immediate assistance.

The Dangerous Elements of Summer Storms | SERVPRO of Orland Park

10/2/2023 (Permalink)

home with fallen tree on roof post storm Call SERVPRO of Orland Park to help restore your Illinois home or business after any disaster!

We are all glad to have said goodbye to the cold and snow of another long winter, but now we get to start preparing for summer storms! Severe weather can pop up at any point during the season, so being ready for it when it happens is crucial.

In northern Illinois, we are vulnerable to high winds, heavy rain and the occasional tornado or two. This can all work against us to create some dangerous situations when a strong storm rolls into town.

Our storm damage restoration team has put together some tips on how to prepare your home for severe weather so read on to stay prepared.

Water and Wind Damage

A single heavy rain can lead to all sorts of water trouble in your home. A gap in your roof can cause water to leak down your walls, a worn-out window pane can invite water inside or clogged gutters can make the rain pour over the side of your house and cause your basement to flood.

In addition to water, wind can have devastating effects. Straight-line winds can blow up to 100 miles per hour or more and can level sheds, throw around lawn equipment and cars and cause widespread damage in a single strong burst.

To help prevent this type of damage, stay on top of home maintenance projects like trimming your trees and tending to roof damage. You should also clean out your gutters often and try to keep your property clear of debris.

Impact Damages

Perhaps one of the most scary parts of a severe storm is the potential for impact damages. Impact damages occur when something heavy falls on or lands on your house or roof. Typically these types of situations can cause the most damage, as falling trees or flying trampolines are heavy and can make, quite literally, a big impact.

As soon as severe weather is predicted, head outside and start preparing your yard. Move your cars and garbage cans into the garage, tie down patio furniture and grills, and clean up your children’s toys. Anything that isn’t secured to your house or the ground has the potential to cause damage to your home if the wind blows fast enough.

Our Storm Cleanup Process

If you do suffer damage, don’t worry! SERVPRO of Orland Park is here to help. Our recovery team is trained to work quickly and efficiently to help you recover and avoid further damages.

We jump into action after your first phone call by creating a personalized restoration plan that is specific to your damage situation. Once we arrive at your home, we can lay tarps and board up windows to secure the rest of your house while we are working.

We are trained to simultaneously dry up any lingering water or moisture while tending to repairs. No disaster situation is too large or too destructive for us! We can rebuild entire rooms or sections of your home if needed, and we will ensure your home is returned back to its preloss condition right away.

Did the last storm leave you with damage? Contact us at SERVPRO of Orland Park.

The Warning Signs of a Tornado in Orland Park

10/1/2022 (Permalink)

Tornadoes are one of the most feared because their strong winds can cause devastating damage to entire towns.  Tornado winds can exceed speeds of 100 miles per hour and this can easily damage homes and businesses as well as uproot trees and toss cars around like they are a toy.  Since it is possible for a tornado to form anywhere in the U.S., it is important to look for the warning signs of the impending storm so you can get to a safe location.

The Difference Between A Tornado Watch And Tornado Warning

Your local news will usually put out a tornado watch or warning.  If your area is under watch, this means that your area is experiencing conditions that make it possible for a tornado to form.  You should be on alert if a tornado watch has been having been issued in the event the situation becomes more dangerous. When a tornado warning has been issued, this means there has been a tornado sighted and you need to take shelter immediately.

Tornado Warning Signs

There are several things you can look for when you know there is a threat of a tornado.  Early warning signs are increasing winds, clouds moving rapidly, and the sky and clouds look green.  Hail is another early warning sign of a tornado and what causes the sky to look the greenish color.

Tornado Preparedness

Knowledge is key to tornado preparedness.  Make sure everyone in your family knows the signs of an approaching tornado and they know what to do.

During a storm listen to your local news or a weather radio station for updates.  You can also install a weather app on your smart phone that will send you updates.

Also, you should consider confining pets to a carrier or placing dogs on a leash during a tornado watch so that you can transfer them to a safe room in case the warning is issued.

Even the most extensive preparation cannot prevent a tornado from causing significant damage to your home.  If this happens it is important to call a storm damage restoration professional immediately to assist you in recovering.

Oak Forrest Smoke and Soot Cleanup

9/5/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Orland Park will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Why SERVPRO? We Rock When It Comes To Fire Clean-Up!

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

When fire damage affects your home or business, SERVPRO of Orland Park is here to help.  Our technicians are IICRC certified and specialize in structure and content cleaning.  The first process in cleaning the structure is to remove the soot residue.  We use dry sponges in order to do this.  In order to reach high areas, such as the ceiling, we will attach the dry sponge to an extension pole.  The dry sponge can be used to wipe down soot that is anywhere in the structure.  These sponges contain special chemicals that absorb the soot without getting the sponge wet.

Every fire damage situation is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. If you have had fire or smoke damage in your home or business call us today (708) 532-3377

Fire Safety

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

Right now is the perfect time to get with family and friends and have a nice camp fire. Here are a few safety tips:

    • If you or someone in your family likes to grill, make sure to use long-handled barbecue tools.
    • Only use your grill outside and keep it away from siding and deck rails.
    • Clean your grill after each use.  This will remove grease that can start a fire.
    • Open your gas grill before lighting.
    • Never leave your grill unattended.
    • Keep a 3-foot safe zone around grills, fire pits and campfires.
    • Attend public fireworks displays; this leaves the lighting to the professionals.
    • Build campfires at least 15 feet away from tent walls, shrubs or other materials that burn.

The Sheer Volume Of Water Will Blow Your Mind!

7/28/2022 (Permalink)

We can never really comprehend the volume of water that is shed from the structures we inhabit until storm damage opens a portion of it to the elements. This type of catastrophe must have a swift, professional response. Hiring a company like SERVPRO that specializes in flood damage and overall disaster remediation is the key to a successful outcome.

Here is a typical storm damage scenario: torrential rains and high winds hit your home for hours. Nearby tree limbs fall, break windows and cause a corner of the roof to collapse.  This allows water to rush in through your attic and to the floors below leaving you with flood damage throughout your Palos Heights home. As the storm begins to weaken, you realize the safety of your family and the structure of your house require a professional response. Leaving even a portion of your home open to the elements risks more water damage, invasion by pests, or unauthorized personnel.

SERVPRO can meet your immediate need to temporarily secure and protect the storm-damaged structure, and prevent further damage or unauthorized entry with board-up and roof tarping services.  Then the process of mitigating and remediating the interior can begin. Storm and flood damage calls for a broad range of skills and specialized equipment possessed by this remediation industry leader.

Expect the SERVPRO team to take the time to create a firm plan outlining all the jobs that must be completed to prepare your home for re-construction. Standing water on every level of your home must be pumped out or extracted with powerful vacuums. The majority of the water collects in the basement or lowest level, so immediate attention focuses there, but SERVPRO's properly prepared and trained technicians examine every inch of the dwelling for flood damage.

Following the removal of the water, SERVPRO's certified workers take moisture measurements of structures, air, and possessions as a post-disaster baseline. Drying goals shortly emerge from their skilled computations, and the recovery spotlight now shines on achieving appropriate moisture levels to minimize permanent damage to wood, metal, and fibers, among other things. Commercial air movers and low grain refrigerant dehumidifiers are precisely placed where needed to dry out the structure, flooring, floor coverings, walls, ceilings, and belongings.

Water damage on your hardwood floor does not have to stress you out anymore

6/22/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage To Hardwood Floors After A Storm

Waterflood from a storm can lead to colossal property destruction. Hardwood floors are especially vulnerable to water damage. When it makes its way into the building, the water can penetrate hardwood floors and cause irreversible damage.

When a storm occurs in your Chicago area, our water removal services can help deal with the situation. SERVPRO has highly trained technicians who can dry the water damaged hardwood floors quickly and efficiently.

Hardwoods tend to hold up better from moisture than softwoods in a water damage situation. During a storm, the combined high density of the wood and high moisture conditions causes it to retain more water. Our water removal procedure centers on preventing permanent warping, cupping, and buckling. The amount of water present and how long it has been there can influence the extent of the water damage.

SERVPRO technicians are IICRC Certified and can assess whether the cup and warp are severe before choosing a solution. If not, we may use sanding during the refinishing process. Before this, we have to stabilize the moisture content level to below 12 percent. It can take 1-2 months before initiating the sanding and refinishing processes, as we have to wait for the wood floors to acclimate. When done prematurely, sanding can cause your hardwood floors to cup or crown as drying progresses. One of our techniques is to place drying mats, about 10 square feet each, and suction the water from this large surface area from between the joints, and if structured, the below subfloor and floor joists.

Veneer Hardwood flooring is more vulnerable to the water damage caused by a storm, as it has a considerably thinner surface. The layers of these types of planks present an almost no chance of restoration. It is typically more economical to discard and start anew. The purpose of our water removal efforts is to dry the hardwood floor as much as possible. Drying prevents mold growth on the wood, which can occur when moisture levels are above 20 percent.

This type of water damage situation also requires minimizing relative humidity to 30-45 percent. SERVPRO technicians use air movers to achieve this purpose, which facilitates airflow above and underneath the wood floor. We may also need to increase the room temperature after the storm, which helps accelerate the evaporation process.

Water damage on your hardwood floor does not have to stress you out anymore. SERVPRO of Orland Park is available 24/7 to offer quick water removal services to your community. Call us today (708) 532-3377.

We are here for you when fire damage strikes your Orland Park home or business

5/27/2022 (Permalink)

Cases where fire consumes everything in an Orland Park property, are rare, and there are numerous reasons for this since even a small fire has the potential to turn into a massive blaze. One reason is the reaction time and effort put in extinguishing the fire. Another reason is what fuels the fire once it starts. There are several other reasons so, in the end, each incident results in different types of damages. The different levels of damage might necessitate unique restorative action so involving a professional is a good idea.

Cases of fire damage in Orland Park fall into three levels – minor, medium, and major damage. At the minor level, most of the loss is from smoke residue. The deposits are also light to moderate in nature, so restoration mostly involves cleaning the affected surfaces. Our SERVPRO technicians can either use dry or wet cleaning techniques to get rid of the residues.

In medium level fire incidents, there is both smoke and heat damage on different surfaces and items, but it is moderate. Heat damage might affect cabinets, drywall, and other contents. Odors might also be more noticeable. Our SERVPRO team can help clean up and refinish surfaces. We clean contents at the job site too and carry out any necessary deodorization procedures eliminating traces of the fire “Like it never even happened.”

In fires categorized as major, heat damage is more severe especially in the areas close to the source. Such blazes leave parts of the structure such as framing charred, so part of the restoration process involves structural repairs. Smoke damage is also widespread reaching different sections of the property. Our SERVPRO team can help with the extensive cleanup and removal of debris from the structure. We also help board up the house or winterize it if the incident happens during the cold season. It is still possible to salvage some contents, but in most cases, they require extensive cleaning which we do offsite.

Proper restoration efforts can help restore your home to a preloss state. Call SERVPRO of Orland Park for assistance (708) 532-3377.

When Disaster Strikes Your Orland Park Commercial Business

5/27/2022 (Permalink)

Some commercial business owners treat property issues as part of doing business, but dealing with Palos Park flood damage can be sometimes problematic.  Flood damage can destroy inventory, stock, supplies, office furniture, documents and electronic equipment as well as cause structural damage.  Also, there could be potential health effects arising from contaminated water and possible mold contamination.  SERVPRO suggests the following to help mitigate water damage to your business facility.

In many cases, flood damage results from the effects of a storm.  There are several types of water damage that can result from storm surges. Some of them include:

• Building displacement or damage
• Mold growth in commercial properties within walls or HVAC systems
• Damage to coastal rail lines, highways, or roads resulting in less accessibility for transportation
• Loss of business, closed doors means lost commercial cash flow, less rent, and loss of customer traffic

How to Save on Flood Damage Restoration

Have a flood insurance program? By purchasing business interruption insurance, you can gain reimbursement for a claim and lessen the impact of no revenue stream and thus lower your total costs. SERVPRO is recognized as a preferred vendor by many insurance and management companies. We can help speed the process of water damage restoration. The best way to reduce or prevent damages generated by storm surges is to implement strategies before the onset of hurricane season. Here are some strategies you should implement:

• Build higher. If you own your commercial building, consider the value of finding the property's base flood elevation and building above it. Hire a structural engineer to offer a plan to reinforce your commercial property.
• Place valuables higher. If your building contains more than one floor, be sure to move valuable assets, technical equipment, and computers to the second floor.
• Invest in preventative installations. Be sure to install some back-flow valves in the property's sewer lines. These valves will prevent city sewage from flowing into your property in the event of a storm surge. Have available access to water surge barricading materials such as sandbags. Also, be sure to elevate electrical systems such as extension cords above the region's flood level. You can also utilize cinder blocks to raise your appliances and most valuable assets above anticipated flood levels.
• Select fast-drying material. Carpeting and wet drywall are susceptible to damage from mold. These porous-surfaced building materials normally require discarding after flooding due to contaminants and mold growth. Build or replace with stone products, tile and no cardboard backed gypsum materials.

To ensure your Palos Heights commercial property can withstand water damage resulting from floods be sure to implement the strategies outlined above.  Post flooding, the most urgent action is to extract the standing water from the premises. Our company has the equipment, training, and expertise to dry out your building, repair material damage, clean, and sanitize your business. Our IICRC-certified professionals are skilled in thoroughly restoring your property to its previous safe, sanitary condition. "Like it never even happened." Let's get you open for business.

How To Help Reduce the Risk of Fire Injury If You Know Someone Who Is A Hoarder

5/16/2022 (Permalink)

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is a condition where a person has persistent difficulty discarding a large amount of personal possessions. These objects will cover the living areas of the home and cause significant distress.  Hoarding can prevent typical use of space and limit activities such as cooking, cleaning, moving through the house, and sleeping.  It could potentially put the individual and others at risk of causing fires, falling, poor sanitation and other concerns.

Increased Fire Risks

  • Cooking risks: if items are too close to the oven or stove, this can make cooking unsafe and start a fire.
  • Space heaters: when there are space heaters being used in the winter, they can tip or be too close to objects than can burn.
  • Electrical wiring:  may be old or worn and not obvious with all the clutter. If there are rodents that are getting into the home, they can also chew on this wire and cause damage which could start a fire.
  • Candles: open flames can be very dangerous in a home with excess clutter.

How Hoarding Impacts First Responders

  • Blocked exits: firefighters can get trapped if there are too many items blocking exit.
  • Excess weight: of the stored items may happen when water is added in trying to put out the fire. This may lead to the building collapsing.
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. The clutter can slow down the search and rescue of people and pets.

  • Help Reduce the Risk of Fire Injury

When talking to a person who hoards, focus on their safety rather than the clutter. Try to be empathetic and understand.

If you know someone in this situation, try to help them make a home safety plan so in the event of a fire, they can make a safe escape. Also try to install working smoke alarms in the home and test them once a month.

You can also try to reach out to their community fire department and let them know of your concerns. They may be able to refer you to someone that can help.

For more information on this topic you can visit the ADAA website.

SERVPRO of Orland Park has experience in cleaning hoarding homes. Hoarding is a specialty cleaning situation and many times involves some sort of bio-hazard situation. PPE is a must in these incidents and should not be completed by family members or friends. Call us today for more information 708-532-3377

5/6/2022 (Permalink)

If you are a business owner, you may feel like you have a lot to lose if a fire were to occur in your business.

Many fires can be avoided if employees are trained properly on how to prevent them. According to OSHA if fire extinguishers are available, it is the business owner's responsibility to educate employees on how to properly use one.  The training should be provided when the employee is initially hired and then once a year for a refresher.

Most fire extinguishers operate using the P.A.S.S. technique:

1. PULL the pin.

2. AIM low, at the base of the fire.

3. SQUEEZE the handle to activate.

4. SWEEP from side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is out.

After Water Removal Why SERVPRO Treats for Microbial Growth

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

Getting an Orland Park residence restored after a disaster means another family can move forward and forget about the stress and hardship caused by a terrible event. At SERVPRO, we treat all our customers like family, so knowing we can help make things right again means a lot to us. We use our specialized training to give those relying on us the best possible service when they need to restore their home.

This is why SERVPRO specialists go one extra step when working on a house in Orland Park that requires water removal services. Some areas of a home can become havens for microbial infestations after being damp for only a short period. Concrete and brick are notorious for sweating, especially after a period of saturation from water loss incidents.

We do everything possible to get your home dry after an incident involving broken pipes using our drying equipment, but ever-present microbes can latch onto moisture and then begin growing. To stop this, an antimicrobial agent that encapsulates any microscopic organisms and then crushes them as it dries takes care of any possible infestations.

Our IICRC training stresses prevention whenever possible, as this helps save our customers money in the long run. Water in a home, even slight dampness, almost always leads to mold and mildew problems. Either can cause health effects in addition to property damage, including loss of keepsakes and other precious belongings. Instead of leaving things merely dry, we prevent the most common problem that might arise out of the situations we just mitigated.

While we remove all of the water we can, microbes only require a minuscule amount. A few drops spread out can seem almost imperceptible to someone. When this amount rests in the pores of brick and concrete, which also happen to provide microbes a perfect little home, treating with a fast-drying anti-fungal agent becomes an effective and cost-effective way to add significant protection to a property.

SERVPRO of Orland Park can help you protect your home with every stage of water removal services and beyond. We do more than mitigate damage; we help prevent it with effective measures that save you money. Call us today (708) 532-3377

Ice Dams Can Be Costly & Dangerous

Ice Dam If you have water damage in your home, we can certainly help with that. Contact us 24/7 365 days a year 708-532-3377 we are here to help!

Ice dams can be a common problem in the winter for houses that get regular snowfall.  The dams form when snow melts and runs down your roof and refreezes near the edge.  This happens when your roof wars to above 32 degrees F which is warm enough to melt the snow while the roof edge remains below freezing.

The key to preventing ice dams is simply to keep your attic and roof cold. Here are some tips on doing that:

  1. Close up attic bypasses
  2. Add roof and sofit vents
  3. Check your attic insulation level and add more if you have less than 8 inches.

Winter Temperatures Can Lead To Frozen Pipes and Property Damage

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Water valve with arrows on how to turn Shut off your water immediately if you notice a pipe leaking.

It's that time of year again! We are slipping and sliding all over the roads. We can see our breath when we open our front door, and we are forced to once again wear gloves, a scarf, and the dreaded stocking cap!

The winter wonderland maybe serene outside, but the colder it gets, the more your inside pipes have a risk of bursting. When the temperature drops below 32 degrees, the water inside pipes can start to freeze.  When this happens, the pipe starts to expand causing it to crack.  A minimal sized crack can lead to costly water damage once the water starts to thaw.

Water damage is among the most common causes of insurance claims. The damage left behind from a burst pipe can range all across the board.  If the crack was large and water was gushing out or has continued to leak for days, you may be looking at some severe damage.

The sooner you are able to address the issue the less damage you have.  Hard wood flooring affected by a category 1 loss (clean water from a burst pipe) can be saved if treated in a timely manner. If you wait two weeks to report the claim to your insurance company, the water damage can turn into mold damage.

Tips to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Make sure your gutters are free of debris so melting snow and ice can flow freely through the gutter.
  • Allow your faucet to drip cold water slowly.  Flowing water will prevent freezing.
  • Do not lower the temperature in the winter months even when you are home.
  • Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
  • If you are away for an extended period of time winterize your pipes by having them drained.
  • If you are away, also have your neighbor check on your home.
  • Disconnect your garden hose and install covers on outside faucets.
  • Wrap pipes near exterior walls and in crawl spaces with pipe insulation
  • Supplies are available at your local hardware and are relatively inexpensive.
  • Make sure heating vents are open in all the rooms. Especially in the basement where it is the coldest.
  • Consider weather sealing your windows to prevent drafts.
  • Insulate outside walls and unheated areas of your home.

What to do if your pipes freeze:

  • Heat up the pipe with a blow dryer, space heater, heating pad or warm towels until the water can freely flow through the pipe.
  • Start thawing it nearest to the faucet. Open the faucet slightly so the water can be released as it starts to thaw.

If your pipe bursts:

  • Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water supply. This will prevent water from continuing to pour out.
  • Call a plumber to fix the pipe. Clean up services cannot begin until the source of the main issue has been fixed.
  • Contact your insurance agent to notify them of your loss and they can assist you in filing a claim.

To All Of The Valued Members of Team Zubricki,

When we began this journey with SERVPRO, I had hoped for amazing people to work with, dream with, and grow with along the way. I could not have dreamed of having a more incredible team of people to succeed with though,  than what we have right now.

Frank and I could not be happier to see all of the people on our team working together as one unit, moving towards a single goal. Each of you bring unique gifts and abilities that has enabled us to be greater than some of our parts. The synergy seen on Team Zubricki is rare, it is humbling, and it has yet again led us to another milestone. This year, at the annual SERVPRO Convention, we were given an award for being in the top 15 franchises in the entire company. To say this took my breath away is an understatement, and we have all of you to thank for your hard work and dedication. You all deserve to share these accolades as much as, or more than we do! Together, we are Team Zubricki, and there is nothing big enough to slow us down or stop us if we continue to join hands and push forward together!

When Coming Back From Vacation Turns Into A Nightmare

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Fall is here! While the crips autumn temps haven’t officially arrived, and the pumpkin spice isn’t yet flowing the level we would like, Chicagoland residents know that the cold months are just around the corner, and the idea of heading to warmer climates for a vacation has already started to whisper in the ear of many people in our area.

So why are we talking about a winter vacation where the weather hasn’t even turned cold yet? We have some great tips for you to right down and follow through on so your fun vacation doesn’t trunk into a nightmare when you return home!

First of all, if you are vacationing during the cold months, it is a good idea to close the "main" water shut off. Unless you have a humidifier connected to your HVAC system that requires water when the furnace turns on, shutting the main water supply off when you are away is a good practice. We have encountered many frozen pipes that have done major damage when people are away during cold spells. Also, don't turn the heat off or down too low. It is vital for your entire home that it doesn’t get too cold indoors, and this simple trick of turning down the heat a little, but not too much, will potentially save you a lot of money by helping to prevent the bitter cold from permeating your pipes, walls and interior construction.

If you do come back from vacation to a disaster, call SERVPRO of Orland Park! We are faster to any disaster and are here to get you back to “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Season Brings Havoc and Uncertainty, But SERVPRO Is Here For You In Orland Park

10/2/2021 (Permalink)

The dreaded tornado siren blares. You hear it and wonder to yourself “is it a test?” “Should I be concerned?”

You look outside and see the ominous dark clouds and the spinning vortex that you have observed many times on TV and in the movies. This is happening! What do you do?

This situation repeats itself many times each year in the USA and in the Midwest especially.Tornadoes are one of the most feared storms/disasters because their strong winds can cause devastating damage to entire towns, and they are completely arbitrary at times with how they damage strikes.

If this happens it is important to call a storm damage restoration professional immediately who can arrive in a timely manner and can get you back preloss conditions. SERVPRO of Orland Park is here for you whether it be to assist after a storm, flood or fire! Call us today!

Did You Know? SERVPRO Uses Sponges To Clean After A Fire!

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

Men Cleaning SERVPRO uses a special dry sponge on surfaces such as drywall.

Soot from fire damage should not initially be cleaned up with water.  SERVPRO uses a special dry sponge on surfaces such as drywall.   It is made of a natural rubber and used like an eraser.  Once the surface of the sponge is dirty, it has to be discarded and cannot be cleaned or reused.  The sponges are very porous and hold a remarkable amount of soot. After wiping the fine particles of the soot off the surface, then it can be wet washed.

There is no substitute for training and experience. As fire and water damage specialists, our business is built upon fire and water restoration expertise. We have the knowledge and the specialized equipment to get your property back to pre-fire condition.

SERVPRO Fire Restoration Services Can Help Restore Your Home

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Our fire restoration services can help restore your home.

The fire in your basement fireplace did not destroy your property, but there are strong smoke odors and heavy soot residue on many furniture items as well as on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Contacting professionals for a job like this can help prevent further damage to your personal belongings and your home. We can restore your residence to its pre-fire state when possible.

Our certified technicians can use dry sponges to remove soot and ash from tables and other surfaces in the affected areas in the basement. If necessary, we may use cleaning solutions to remove dirt and residue from various surfaces like floors, walls, and ceilings. Burned contents such as curtains, clothing, and throw rugs can cause odors, which is why we remove them from the structure. With your permission, the crew can throw away all burnt items. The team can clean and sanitize any items we save and pack-out, categorize, label, and store them off-site until they finish restoring your home.

Removing charred furniture and cleaning surfaces may not always eliminate smoke odors. The techs may also have to utilize industrial-strength odor removal deodorizers to get rid of pungent smells from soft materials such as drapes, carpet, and upholstery. Thermal foggers can also be put to use to eradicate thick smoke aromas. It may become necessary to employ a portable ozone machine to neutralize and remove lingering smoke smells. If we use this piece of equipment, you must vacate the home until we complete the job. You can trust our crews to deem the air quality inside your property to be at a safe level before you return home.

SERVPRO of Orland Park can help restore your fire-damaged home. If you experience a fire emergency in the area, call us right away at (708) 239-1444. We are close by and hare to serve you in your time of need.

Disaster times 4! How SERVPRO of Orland Park Was There For Our Military Men & Women

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

It isn't often you go through a serious disaster, let alone two. The military service members in Fort Polk, Louisiana though, went through 4 major disasters in just a few months. SERVPRO, was there to help them in their time of need! Over 10,000 military service members and their families, were affected by the Category 4 Hurricanes Laura and Delta, which struck Louisiana in August and October of 2020, and in between that, Tropical Storm Beta, which delivered hurricane-level winds, rain, and flooding. Then, when things seemed to be over, in February of 2021, they suffered through an uncharacteristically severe ice storm that led to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issuing a Louisiana Disaster Declaration in March 2021.  In partnership with Corvias Property Management, nine SERVPRO franchises were able to assist in repairing the interiors of more than 800 occupied homes. "We were honored to be called on by the fine folks at Corvias Property Management to assist the brave military men and women in their hour of need," said Frank Zubricki, owner of SERVPRO of Orland Park. "When I think of all that these amazing folks have done for us, it was a privilege to be a part of this cleanup and repair effort, and we are so heartened to have been able to play a part in getting these families lives back to normal." When disaster strikes, SERVPRO is here to help. Ask The Experts: What About The Smoke & Soot?

5/2/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke damage can often be one of the most widespread effects to contend with in your home after a fire disaster. While there are many other concerns, such as structural weaknesses that often take precedent for restoration and mitigation, restoring damage to your property should be a focus of whatever professional outfit you choose. Our team can arrive quickly to help lessen the damage and prolonged impact of a fire emergency, and work to eliminate the presence of smoke damage.

Smoke damage often depends on the type of smoke that affected your home throughout the fire. Dry smoke results from high heat, but is also a residue that is much easier for our SERVPRO technicians to clean with dry and wet sponges on the coated surfaces. Wet smoke leaves a thick residue on surfaces and contents, which often requires specialized equipment to clean and deodorize fully.  The heat generated by a house fire plays a key role in the actual penetration of soot particles into porous materials like drywall and fabrics.

Indoor air quality is also a primary focus for our SERVPRO professionals dispatched to your home once the first responders have left. We work quickly to establish our purification equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to run the available air through HEPA filters over time to begin pulling smoke particles and soot from the environment and reducing hazards or risks of exposure without respirators.

Smoke can provide many damaging effects after a fire emergency.  Our SERVPRO of Orland Park emergency response team has the expertise and tools to help.  Give us a call today (708) 532-3377.

Ask The Experts: What about when disaster strikes my business?

5/2/2021 (Permalink)

For many small business owners, their small business is their livelihood. Any disaster that happens to hurt the company can be detrimental to the owner’s finances in a huge way. One of the most common issues that many business owners face is commercial fire damage. There are many ways in which fire can affect your business. However, there are steps that a company can take both before and after fire damage occurs to mitigate any damage that a fire may cause.

Fire Prevention

Although it seems obvious, being able to prevent fire damage from occurring is the best defense against fire.  There are many things that a business can do to increase their first line against fire issues.  First, always use the highest quality building materials possible. Many new building materials are much more fire resistant and can end up saving a lot of money.  They may be more expensive to put in, but if a fire occurs, they can help save thousands of dollars in repairs.  Also, if your facility has a lot of employees, be sure to have safety meetings and discuss the ways they can reduce the likelihood of a fire taking place.  For example, a cigarette should be disposed of properly rather than just throwing it on the ground or in a trash can.  These steps can go a long way in reducing the chances of a fire.  However, at the end of the day even if a business takes the necessary precautions, a fire may still occur.  It is important to have a good plan in place and a company that you trust to help clean up the fire damages.

Fire Damage

Some business owners may thing that fire damage is something that will easily be cleaned up.  However, there are often several layers of issues that the small business owner faces in the aftermath.  Flames in a fire can cause damage to the exterior and the interior of the building.  Sometimes there may even be structural damage as well.  The damage caused by fire and smoke are a significant issue.  Many people may feel as though the smoke just smells bad but it can cause long term damage as well.  It is important that you work with a quality experienced restoration company to restore the building that was damaged.

Ask The Experts: Being ready for the storm is a huge part of the battle!

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Storms can happen at any time since as we all know the weather in the Chicago area can be unpredictable to say the least. Being prepared is a must so here is our recommended list:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Cellphone battery back up charger
  • Canned food
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Bottled Water
  • Blankets
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Battery Power Radio

Having these items may help keep panic at a minimum.  Keep these items in a safe place you can go in the event of any type of storm.  If you have a basement, or possibly in a bathroom closet if you do not have a basement. The canned food should have a long shelf life so be sure to check expiration dates at least once a year and replenish your supply if necessary. Also be sure to regularly test your batteries.

Ask The Experts: Ways To Help Avoid Water Damage In Your Home or Business

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

Though some water damage is inevitable, there are things you can do to help avoid costly water damage in your home and business. While there is no guaranteed way to stop it from happening, following these guidelines may help reduce your risk of flooding.

1. Maintain Your Bathroom

Attending your bathroom regularly may help you notice any excess water that was not there before. You should also check for a broken pipe and look to see if any of them have corrosion as this may be a sign of a problem. If your water bill is unusually high, you might want to have a professional come take a look to see if you need a pipe cleanup.

2. Get Your HVAC System Checked Regularly

HVAC systems can cause moisture problems in your home. This is why it is a good idea to have someone come look at it at least once a year. Having someone come out and do regular maintenance on your system may help prevent you from having to deal with water damage or mold remediation later on.

3. Watch Your Appliances

Appliances that require water typically have a supply line. This hose can crack or break and cause a buildup of liquid around it. You should inspect all of these on a regular basis and have someone do regular maintenance on them. Usually, your insurance company is more likely to help cover the cost of the cleanup if you have water in your home if you take care of the flooding right away.

If you do end up with water in the home, it is a good idea to have a water damage expert come to assess the situation. Always take special care when it comes to any electrical appliances near the flooded area. Never let the problem go untreated as it may lead to mold growth and other issues. The sooner you get it taken care of the better off you will be.

When disaster strikes, give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO works hard to stay on the cutting edge of restorations technology nationally, providing our technicians with some of the most advanced tools on the market to evaluate and combat flood damage in Orland Park. Storms, Winds, Tree Limbs in Your Orland Park Home

8/13/2020 (Permalink)

Multiple tornadoes came through our area this past week. High winds sent tree branches everywhere and days later a lot of homeowners are still cleaning up their yards and tarping their roofs from the damage.

SERVPRO of Orland Park can help. We can inspect the damage and secure the structure by boarding up your window or protecting it with plastic sheeting. The techs can also check for additional breaches to the property such as a hole in the roof or a broken door and secure them as they did with the window. Securing your home helps prevent water from flowing into the house. Plus, it can protect against wildlife or unwanted visitors from entering the structure.

Next, our SERVPRO team can remove all excess water from the residence. This step helps to reduce further damages to your home. Quick water removal can also prevent wood rot and mold growth. When extracting water, the techs may employ truck-mounted, or portable extractors or commercial grade pumps to eliminate the water fast. The level of water inside the house helps determine what type of equipment the crew may utilize for the job.

Stormwater can also cause damage to the interior walls, floor tile, and ceilings.  If this happens, our skilled technicians may have to remove various wet materials such as drywall or insulation. If the job requires further construction though we can do substantial rebuilds, our techs can assist you in getting in touch with a qualified contractor. Since flood water is contaminated, our crew must discard all wet carpeting and padding as well as any furnishings or contents that come in contact with the water. During the drying process, the team may employ air movers and industrial axial fans to dry the affected areas thoroughly. The crew can also use dehumidifiers to eliminate moisture from inside the structure.

SERVPRO of Orland Park can restore your property to its preloss condition when possible.  Contact us today (708) 532-3377.

Flood Damage Remediation After A Storm

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

We can never really comprehend the volume of water that is shed from the structures we inhabit until storm damage opens a portion of it to the elements. This type of catastrophe must have a swift, professional response. Hiring a company like SERVPRO that specializes in flood damage and overall disaster remediation is the key to a successful outcome.

Here is a typical storm damage scenario: torrential rains and high winds buffet your home for hours. Nearby tree limbs fall, break windows and cause a corner of the roof to collapse. The breach allows water to rush in through your attic and to the floors below, leaving you with flood damage throughout your Orland Park home.

Cleaning Smoke Residue After A Chimney Fire

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

If you have a fireplace in your Chicago residence, you need to take care of your chimney on a regular basis. A build-up of creosote along the lining walls of the chimney can facilitate the beginnings of a fire in your chimney. Such a build-up is created by unburned materials in the smoke accumulating on the walls of the chimney and making a sticky substance which can catch fire quickly.

Annual inspections and cleanings are therefore a must for your chimney in your Chicago home. If you have still experienced a chimney fire and fire damage to your home, you should give our professionals at SERVPRO a call as soon as the fire is out. We can help you to clean up the mess the fire left behind, including making any necessary repairs.

Each fire progresses through steps, putting out both dry and wet smoke. Some fires make a large enough proportion of one kind of smoke to characterize the whole exposure as predominately dry or wet smoke. We use different cleaning methods to remove the different residues. Usually, wet smoke is more challenging to remove. A chimney fire can quickly spread throughout your home fast, so we could be dealing with various surfaces that have been affected.

A few factors determine whether smoke residues are dry or wet, including the rate of combustion, the kind of material that is burning, and how much oxygen is present during the fire. In many fires, the more oxygen which is available, the faster the combustion process is. Fast-burning fires with plenty of oxygen produce a dry smoke, and slow-moving fires without much oxygen make wet smoke.

More materials are restorable in conditions with dry smoke. It carries few aerosols and deposits small, dry particles. It does not stain surfaces as deeply as wet smoke, and it has a less pungent odor. SERVPRO techs use less aggressive cleaning procedures in these cases, but dry smoke usually occurs from hotter fires, which do more damage.

Our restoration efforts are more involved with wet smoke residues. Usually, they contain a high proportion of aerosols like solvents, varnishes, and other liquid components. Since the fire is moving slowly, it has its time to work its way into crevices and enclosed areas that generally would not be contaminated by a fire that is fast-burning. Hot, oily residues discolor plastic materials within minutes.

Many times, contents exposed to a smoldering fire and wet smoke cannot be restored. Even stripping and refinishing may not prove enough. Aerosols in wet smoke can soften, penetrate, and stained surfaces and burning plastics and rubbers making large, black particles which smudge or smear.

No matter the type of smoke damage done by the fire, SERVPRO of Orland Park does our best to restore everything that is salvageable, and we make repairs when needed to get your home back to its original state.  Just give us a call at (708) 532-3377 if you have had a fire in your home.

Using The Right Water Extraction Tools

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Residential flooding does not always result in a submerged ground floor and occupants with very wet feet. In fact, in many cases we handle don’t involve huge amounts of standing water. Either the leak or fault is not severe enough to cause intensive water intrusion. Alternatively, the laws of physics have their way, and liquid water gets trapped in porous materials.

On the other hand, SERVPRO also has lots of experience dealing with severe cases of flood damage in Orland Park. When storm waters intrude upon a structure, the cleanup is different from a ground floor pipe bursts that cover the rooms in two inches of standing water; we are here to help you eliminate it quickly. To do this, we employ a range of straightforward and sophisticated extraction tools.

Weighted Compression
These tools work by, literally, squeezing the liquid out of fabrics (usually carpets). They use heavyweights (sometimes an operator stands on top) to push water out of the underlay and into an extraction machine. One such water extractor is called a Rover.

Vacuum Sealed Water Claw
Water claws are compatible with ‘carry-in,’ and truck-mounted pumps, but the latter is only present on-site in rare circumstances. The tool depends on the presence of water to construct a tight seal, so the SERVPRO technicians first extract as much liquid as possible from the underlay. Then, the process gets completed with a traditional carpet cleaning wand.

Traditional Carpet Wands
The more basic carpet cleaning wands are not as efficient at extracting liquid from subflooring and other types of fibrous materials. For this reason, SERVPRO only uses them in conjunction with other tools. Water mats also increase the suction surface of the carpet and are very effective in drawing moisture out from the seams of hardwood flooring. This also helps to dry out the supporting floor joists in a crawl space structure.

Hard Floor Squeegees
While tools like squeegees are quite simple, they can be an effective way to push excess water out and away from structural materials like hardwood, linoleum, and tile floors.

The Purpose of Extraction
The efficient and controlled extraction of standing water has a very positive impact on the overall drying process. It has a significant effect, for example, on the number of drying tools and the timeframes required to restore the home and contents to an optimal moisture equilibrium. Vacuum tools are the best form of standing water removal. The stronger the vacuum pressure and airflow, the more powerful the extraction equipment. For instance, truck-mounted devices have a much greater vacuum pressure than the more compact, portable tools, though the latter is a staple of most residential cases of flood damage.

Fire Damage In Your Palos Heights Business

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

After a fire has been extinguished, assessment of the damage can begin. With fire damage also comes damage from smoke, soot, and the chemicals and water used by firefighters, as well as structural damage. Some of this structural damage is caused by firefighters as they put the fire out.

Beginning as soon as possible after such a catastrophic event can save time and money in the future. While repairs may take months to complete, waiting to begin can allow many situations to worsen, leading to even longer time periods for completion and increased damages overall.

SERVPRO understands that there is more than your productivity at stake – worker safety, inventory, and ability to continue production in the near future are also important, in addition to re-establishing the integrity of your business and salvaging the contents inside. We restore more than buildings – we also strive to keep other businesses in our area functional and capable of surviving the worst catastrophes.

Fire and intense heat damage different materials in a myriad number of ways. Much depends on how your warehouse was made, but also known to be crucially important are the contents, including type, volume, and surface area. Knowing the facts pertinent to a warehouse's fire helps us in every step, from clean-up to the final restorative touches.

SERVPRO of Orland Park is capable of total restoration and clean-up. If you have experienced a fire in your building call us today (708) 532-3377.

Water Damage To The Belongings In Your Home

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

Your home is more than just four walls and a roof. You and your family have things in it that you consider being special. Memories, trophies, gifts from loved ones – they all have a special place, a secure and protected place, inside your home, safe from damaging threats of the outside world.

Leaks from water lines or appliances inside your home can release water that can damage your furnishings and those prized possessions. This damage can take place in moments when books and magazines are saturated, or over a period of a few hours or days when it involves Grandma's antique quilts stored in the basement. Depending on the source of the water and the location, things can become soggy and wet fast.

The water damage restoration technicians at SERVPRO can preserve your belongings by drying them out, along with other restorative techniques. Our equipment covers a wide range of possible needs when disasters involving water happen in your home. Repairing a home's structure is not the only aspect of restoration we provide. Our IICRC training includes approved methods of cleaning and restoring upholstery, drapes, carpets and rugs, and other home furnishings made from textiles.

Upholstered cushions with textured weaves are often made from various fibers. If these are not cared for correctly, the different components can dry unevenly. These need to be dried in a special way and possibly stretched while trying to retain their correct lengths. Soft but stiff brushes can also be necessary when restoring cushions so that their original naps are also maintained.

Special keepsakes such as antique quilts and wall-hangings can be taken to our site and laundered and dried with special equipment. These are often too large to be handled adequately in a home's washer and dryer. Placing them inside a unit that is too small can result in shredded fabric. Reading materials can be dried rapidly so that the curling of pages is minimized, but it is rare when books or magazines are completely undamaged by contact with water. We can ensure that the moisture content of paper-related items is within normal moisture content levels before they are returned to you so that secondary water damage is not a concern.

Let us help you restore your home's contents after water damage has affected your home.  Call SERVPRO of Orland Park (708) 532-3377 at any time of the day or night. We are always available to answer your call, and we will consult with you regarding the situation.

SERVPRO Remedies The Effects From Smoke and Fire Damage

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

Almost all house fires cause smoke damage of some kind. Whether it is an isolated kitchen fire or a much larger one, SERVPRO almost always needs to treat smoke damage of some form in the aftermath of a fire. But not all materials are created equal, and some can harbor smoke much more readily than others. Knowing what materials do and don't have significant fire damage can help you to make an early guess on the costs and time that it may take to get your home smoke and damage-free.

Materials that Harbor Smoke Odors

Materials that are porous, such as fabric, wood, and grout, are those that take the most fire damage from smoke in Orland Park. These materials have pockets of spaces ranging from microscopic sizes to easily seen ones, inside which smoke particles can become lodged and prove difficult to remove. Even the tiniest pores in the wood are vulnerable, as smoke particles are often smaller than cells or microorganisms. These are the materials that SERVPRO brings out the heavy guns for, applying advanced area foggers to get into the deepest recesses. Other tools such as CO2-based deodorizers may be used to remove smells from a concentrated area. In cases where ash and smoke damage is severe, we may also apply specific and thorough cleaning processes to rid the object or surface of its smoke fully. It may be necessary to use a pressured CO2 pellet blasting to remove charred damage from raw wood such as garage ceilings.

Materials Resistant to Smoke

The most resistant materials to smoke damage include metal, stone, and plastic. These materials are for the most part solid throughout, providing few places for the smoke to latch on that cannot be quickly and easily washed. Note that for stone, cracks and molding materials can still be harbors for stray smoke particles. In some cases, laminated woods or smooth tiles can also give the same advantages, but it is much easier for these to be breached and deeply affected by the smoke.

SERVPRO of Orland Park is a locally-owned franchise with the tools and training necessary to fully rid your home of smoke and other signs of a fire. Call us anytime (708) 532-3377

Drying Out A Flooded Crawl Space

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

When you have water damage to your home, it can go down to your crawl space as well. Water damaged crawl space is many times difficult to access. The access door is generally small and challenging for equipment from a remediation company such as SERVPRO to get through. Even when the door of your crawl space is big enough for equipment, the crawl space could lack enough room inside of it for a dehumidifier to stand upright under the floor system. Working could be difficult as well. Removal of insulation might be necessary, the floor could be mud or dirt, and you might need to have the foundation of the house, or the HVAC system inspected.

With all of the complications, you definitely do not want to handle cleaning up water damage in your Orland Park crawl space by yourself. One thing our technicians will need to be careful of is electrical hazards being present, so we need to ensure that the electrical circuits running under the home have been deactivated. We’ll also need to check to see if the structure has been affected and could collapse. The ground setting could affect the footings and foundation walls. The water in crawl spaces is generally black or gray because of dirt flooring, so proper equipment has to be worn.

Our SERVPRO technicians will remove any standing water from the crawl space, and if a plastic vapor barrier isn’t present, pumping or extracting water could be from a muddy surface of the crawl space. We’ll find the lowest point in the area and use the right submersible pump to get a majority of the standing water out. Once most of it is removed, the next step is to figure out the best way to dry the structural components of the floor.

When our equipment won’t fit, an option we have is to use flex hose as a duct to move air from dehumidifiers to the crawl space. A piece of light gauge sheet metal can be cut to fit the dehumidifier outlet to vent dry air into areas that are small.

Crawl spaces can be tricky to dry out, but the technicians at SERVPRO of Orland Park are trained to handle these situations.  Call us at (708) 532-3377 if your crawl space becomes flooded for any reason.

SERVPRO Remediates All Types of Damage After a Fire

Candles are lovely for ambiance, and many people use scented candles to give off a pleasant aroma. They can also come in handy during a power outage. However, you need to use candles responsibly to avoid a fire in your Orland Park home. It is essential to keep the candle away from anything flammable, and not to leave it unattended at any time.

Sometimes, as careful as we are, candles still start home fires. Before you know it, you can be looking at severe fire damage in your Orland Park, which is when you need to call our professionals at SERVPRO for help. When the fire is out, we are the ones you can trust to clean and repair your home, so the fire looks "Like it never even happened."

Fires can result in varying ranges of damage, making each restoration project unique. With fire damage which is minor, only specific areas or rooms might be affected by smoke residues, and the smoke damage is not heavy. Our restoration services might involve dry or wet cleaning of walls, ceilings, floors, and your possessions. A few areas may need repainting, while only a few items need replacing.

When the fire damage is moderate, the smoke residues are as well, and more items need wet cleaning to eliminate residues. The areas that need repainting and the items that need replacing increase and floors might need refinishing. Heat damage to cabinets, drywall, and contents means more materials that need replacing. SERVPRO techs may be able to clean contents at the job site, and smoke odors are present and could need additional deodorization after cleaning.

When the fire has been more severe, heat and fire damage is worse at the source of the fire. Finishes and structural framing could be charred, resulting in repairs to the structure. Smoke residues are spread throughout a significant portion of your home, and odors are strong. We may need to board up your home, establishing a source of electricity, and take out any smoke-filled and charred debris. Our restoration services involve extensive cleaning of your structure and likely need restorers to pack and move any salvageable contents off-site for cleaning. We also use various methods for deodorization.

SERVPRO of Orland Park understands the different types of fire damage that is possible and we are prepared to handle them all.  Just give us a call (708) 532-3377 and we can help!

SERVPRO Answers the Call 25/7 for Restoration Services

4/27/2020 (Permalink)

First responders can deal with the immediate danger of a home emergency. Contractors can replace the weakened structure or perform remodeling duties. The restorer operates in between, performing drying, cleaning, and deodorizing to ensure permanent damages are kept to a minimum. Our restoration services are professional using our employees local to the area with access to national resources and equipment.

Water Damage

The restoration of water damage falls under two broad categories. The first is open system drying. Principally, open system drying involves exchanging moist indoor air with drier outdoor air. SERVPRO achieves this by opening windows and doors in the home to create an open circuit. The strategic placement of rapid air-movers encourages both airflow, through centrifugal motion, and evaporation by raising surface temperatures.

Restoration services using open-system drying may be deemed inappropriate by a SERVPRO technician. During colder periods of the year, the opening of windows and ventilation in Orland Park may not be feasible. In these circumstances, a technician can use a closed-system drying method. The core principles remain the same, except dehumidifiers with desiccant chemicals are used for the exchange of moist air with drier air. Sometimes, a drying tent may be set up to concentrate remediation efforts.

Both methods are proper drying techniques for your Orland Park home. Humidity levels need to be monitored continuously throughout the operation using thermal hygrometers. By keeping moisture in the air below 60 grains per pound, SERVPRO can ensure microbial growth remains under control throughout the process. This controlling of microbial growth is essential to avoiding expensive secondary damages to your structure and possessions.

Restoration services are geared toward mitigating loss and guarding against future damage. Contact SERVPRO of Orland Park today (708) 532-3377.

Sump Pump Maintenance

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Our area has not seen much rain in the past couple of weeks so the last thing on your mind is to check your sump pump.  A quick checkup on it might prevent water damage to your basement in the future.

  • Check that the unit is plugged in and the breaker is not tripped.
  • Make sure the float is free of any debris and away from the side wall which may prevent it from working properly.
  • Check the inlet and make sure that it is free of any debris that could prevent it from pumping the water out.
  • Check the area where the sump pump drains to ensure that it is far enough from the foundation so that water will not leak right back in.

An easy way to test if its working is to fill the pit with enough water to reach the float and this should trigger the sump pump to start pumping.

How Much Do You Know About Your Sump Pump?

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a sump pump, most the time you don't realize how important it is until it stops working.  Power outages, failure and a sump pump that cannot handle the capacity are common problems.  Another is knowing how old is your sump pump?? Avoid potential problems by doing routine inspections or replacing your old sump pump. Usually sump pumps should be replaced every 5 years or according to manufacturers guidelines and each year the sump, switch and float should be inspected as well.  Pay attention to how often the sump pump is running and if it runs regularly or there is a higher water table, consider a sump pump with higher horsepower.

Another way to increase the pump's efficiency and prolong life is to clean your sump pit, remove any dirt, sand, gravel and other debris routinely. Ensure that the discharge line opening is free of obstructions so that water can be pumped through the line and out of your basement or crawlspace and also be aware in the winter the discharge line may freeze bringing the water back into your house.  Regular checks can make sure you don't ever get surprised by your sump pump!

Detecting Water Leaks

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

With any leak or spill, it’s the water you don't see that can cause the most damage. In order to find that materials that are wet we mainly rely on a Moisture Meter. There are two types, pin-type and pinless.  Pin-type Moisture Meters measure the resistance between test pins inserted into a piece of wood/building material and use that reading as a proxy for the object’s absolute moisture level. Pinless Moisture Meters rely on the ability of moisture to inductively distort an electric field created by turning on the meter.  This sounds like a bunch of scientific talk, and it is!  But mainly the moisture meters will tell you when something is wet and how wet, so you can find any hidden wet spots in your home.  While the surface may seem dry, the water you don’t see can contain bacteria, cause mold or rot, and cause other unseen damage that must be mitigated immediately.

The Unexpected Danger Of Water In Your Home

7/2/2019 (Permalink)

This time of year it can rain unexpectedly and leave a large amount of water behind causing your home or business to flood. With the most recent storm that passed through our area, that is exactly what happened. Many area businesses and homes flooded and in some homes the water reached over 4 feet high because once it entered the home it had nowhere else to go.

In one house in particular, the water level reached an electrical panel that had not been shut off. This caused the panel to explode and the entire back of the home was engulfed in flames within seconds. This seems impossible but it does happen. Electric and water do not mix. Luckily everyone was able to escape the home safely and without injury.

What could they have done to prevent this? If you ever notice there is water in your home, identify the source of the water.  If it is coming from a pipe or appliance you can turn off the water in your home.  If the water is coming from an outside source you cannot control, such as a flood, have the electric company safely turn off the power to your home.

If you have flood or fire damage in your home we can help (708) 532-3377

Fire Damage In Your Orland Park Business

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

For many Orland Park small business owners, their business is their livelihood. Any disaster that happens to hurt the company can be detrimental the owner’s finances in a huge way. One of the most common issues that many business owners face is commercial fire damage .

Preventing Winter Water Damage

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fall is here and winter is fast approaching. Fall is the time to perform a few simple checks to ensure you home is prepared for the cold winter ahead.

If you do already have an ice dam and are unable to remove the snow from the roof, best way to get rid of it is to hire a roofing company to steam it off.

Preventing A Dryer Fire In Your Orland Park Home

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

The U.S. Fire Administration reports there are 2,900 dryer fires reported each year.  The damage from these fires totals to a staggering 35 million dollars. With so much at risk, it is important to understand what can cause a dryer fire and how to prevent them in your home.

CLEAN THE LINT FILTER

A clogged lint filter is the leading contributing factor in dryer fires. 34 percent of reported dryer fires is due to failing to clean out the lint trap according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

A good habit to get into is every time you unload the dryer, clean out the lint trap.  If you are putting a new load of wet clothes in the dryer, double check that the lint trap is clean to lower your risk of fire.  Clean filters also allow the dryer to run more efficiently, allowing your wet clothes to dry faster and preventing your machine from overheating.

INSPECT DRYER DUCTS REGULARLY

If the dryer vent or ducts are blocked, this can also cause a dryer fire.  Check your ducts once a month to ensure there are no blockages.  Blockages can come from an accumulation of lint, an animal that is nesting inside, or a snow buildup over the outside vent.

Accidents can still happen, even despite your best efforts. If your Orland Park house has been damaged by smoke or fire, call SERVPRO of Orland Park (708) 532-3377. We have the resources to get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

Commercial Storm Damage Cleanup in Palos Heights, IL

8/3/2018 (Permalink)

The weather in the Chicago area can be very unpredictable.  We can experience heavy rains in a short period of time causing the sewer systems to back up and streets to flood.

If you see there is a flash flood watch, this means that a flash flood is possible.  A flash flood warning means that a flood is about to happen or already taking place.  If a flash flood occurs, you should make sure everyone gets to higher ground as quickly as possible.

Your business can prepare for any potential disaster, including flash floods. Keep all essential equipment and documents elevated from the floor.  Ideally, they should be stored on the second floor of the building or higher.  Back-up electronic data daily to cloud storage or to an external drive so the files can still be accessed in the event of a disaster.

It is a good idea to have a battery-powered radio available on-site.  In case of a power outage, you and your staff can keep updated on the current conditions.  (FEMA) The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a list of recommended supplies in the event of a disaster, such as a flashlight and first aid kit.

SERVPRO of Orland Park can help your business get back on track after flooding or other disasters. Call us today for more information or a free inspection (708) 532-3377.

Mold Removal in Oak Forest, IL

7/30/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know that mold can spread in as little as 48 hours?

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

After all the contaminated areas have been removed, the remaining area will be thoroughly cleaned with specialized industrial cleaners.

The areas will then be dried using high velocity fans and dehumidifiers.

Being Prepared For A Storm In Orland Park

6/22/2018 (Permalink)

Unexpected emergencies like severe weather call for immediate action.  Here are a few tips to help you be better prepared when a storm rolls into town.

  • Build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder.  Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember , rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning.  However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors.  If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

If you have storm damage to your home or property, call us today (708)532-3377. Timely mitigation is key to minimize secondary damages caused by storms.

The Basics of Electrical Fire Damage

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

The professionals at SERVPRO of Orland Park can help you take care of your electrical fire.

Fire damage in your home or business can occur without warning.  Determining the extent of the loss is critical to planning the fire cleanup and restoration.  Identifying the source of the fire is necessary to understand what conditions were favorable to start the fire.  One of the most commonly overlooked causes is overloaded electrical receptacles.

Overcrowded electrical outlets can over burden the electrical circuit and set the stage for an electrical fire.  The most obvious sign of this is a power strip or outlet that has several cords plugged into it.  Although this might be convenient, this increases the chance of an electrical fire.  You should frequently inspect these and unplug what you are not using at the time.

Another concern that may be a warning sign is flickering lights or lights that appear to be dimmer than usual.  This can be a problem because many homeowners may think their light bulb is getting close to needing replacement.  This may also be a sign that the light bulb is reaching its maximum capacity, so it is important to monitor this to ensure electrical safety.  Homeowners should never make assumptions when it comes to electrical safety and the safety of those who reside in the home.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

The possibilities of an electrical fire are serious concerns that must be dealt with in an urgent matter.  In the event of an electrical or any other type of fire, contact our team of professionals at SERVPRO of Orland Park at (708) 532-3377.  Our team will assist you.

SERVPRO Recognizes National Preparedness Month

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

"Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can."

Reminder to Home and Business Owners:

“Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.”

Orland Park, IL (Grassroots Newswire) August 23, 2017 - September is National Preparedness Month (http://www.ready.gov/September), an annual event sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to raise awareness about the importance of preparing—in advance—for the unexpected. In support of this initiative, Chuck Williams, owner of SERVPRO® of Orland Park, encourages Orland Park property owners to take the following two steps now to protect their family, home, and business in the aftermath of a disaster.

  1. Review and update your emergency preparedness plan, including business and life continuity plans. If you don’t yet have a plan, use the tools provided by FEMA to get started. (https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan)
  2. Collect and store time-critical information, like the location of shutoff valves, fire suppression system controls, and emergency contact numbers electronically, where it is immediately available to assist first responders.

“Evacuation plans and emergency supply kits help you survive a disaster, but a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan helps you recover from a disaster,” said Williams. “The most effective response to any emergency is a fast response. That’s why having critical system and contact information at your fingertips is so important. A quick and effective response helps minimize repairs and downtime, helping both businesses and families get back on track in less time, with less stress.”

SERVPRO offers tools for both commercial and residential property owners to help them minimize damage and recover quickly from emergencies. The SERVPRO READY app stores essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Both home and business owners can download the free app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of Orland Park as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) and storing that profile in the READY app.

“Rapid response from a disaster cleanup and restoration specialist can help the property owner evaluate options, start the insurance process, and take the right steps from the beginning to bring their property back to normal,” said Williams. “Even in the confusion and panic that often surround a disaster, a property owner or manager using the SERVPRO READY app can reach out for expert help right from the scene, using a cell phone.”

SERVPRO® of Orland Park specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Information on Mold Remediation in Orland Park

Mold growth begins anywhere from 2-3 days after a storm causes water damage in Orland Park. The mold is a harmful issue, and it can negatively affect your health, house, and the contents within your home.  As the length of exposure to storm water damage increases, the chance for air spores that spread mold also escalates. Mold remediation becomes more challenging as the signs of mold growth that include musty odors, and discolored surfaces, become more apparent.

Act Fast

Our highly trained mold removal technicians use the latest technology and tools to quickly address your mold problem in a

manner that effectively removes mold colonies. Unlike DIY techniques, our SERVPRO professional service does not carry the risk of improperly removing mold, in this way, expediting a more rapid return to a healthy home environment.  We are also trained and licensed to handle lead, asbestos and other dangerous materials that may show up during the mold removal process.

We are available 24 per day. Before your appointment, be sure to:

  • Inventory damaged and missing goods for your insurance claim.
  • Throw away all sealed and unsealed food and beverage contacted by storm flood waters.
  • Open windows and doors.
  • Refrain from using electrical devices until it is safe.
  • Remove standing water when possible.
  • Use dehumidifiers and fans to ventilate your home; SERVPRO can perform this task upon arrival.

Our mold remediation technician will also determine if any contents in your home are salvageable.  Porous items that are wet for over 48 hours and cannot be completely dried and cleaned must be disposed of.

This list includes carpet, carpet padding, ceiling tiles, clothing, drywall, floor tiles, insulation, leather goods, paper, upholstery, wallpaper and wood items.

When our mold remediation expert arrives, he will:

  • Apply biocides.
  • Decide whether or not you can stay in your house during the mold remediation process.
  • Determine if additional ventilation and containment is needed.
  • Look for mold in the HVAC system and biological hazards in the home.
  • Test for any additional mold after the mold remediation process.
  • Use quick structural drying techniques.

Grilling Safety Tips to Prevent Fires

7/13/2017 (Permalink)

When the warmer weather hits, there is nothing better than the smell of food on the grill.  According to the NFPA  three out of five households own a gas grill, which means there’s an increased risk of fires in homes.

Each year an average of 8,900 of home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all the injuries involving grills are due to thermal burns.

Even though nearly half the people who grill do it year round, most of the injuries happen in the month of July, followed by May, June and August.

Safety Tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Be sure to place your grill well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in the trays below the grill.

Every mold infestation is different

Mold-this can be a scary word for home owners.  No one wants to find out that their home is subject to mold and mildew but it happens every day.  It is not uncommon for mold to be present in the home due to a number of factors such as water damage from leaky pipes or a natural event such as flooding due to excessive rains.  Whatever the case may be, it is essential to have access to trained technicians for mold removal in Orland Park.

Understanding Mold

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Consider these facts:

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold infestation is different, from the amount of mold to the types of materials affected. Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for a “typical” mold remediation infestation:

  1. Emergency Contact - (708) 532-3377
  2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  3. Mold Containment
  4. Air Filtration
  5. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  6. Cleaning Contents and Belongings
  7. Restoration

Does Your Palos Heights Home Have a Mold Problem?

5/9/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours

Prepare Your Business For Flooding in Orland Park

4/18/2017 (Permalink)

The weather has been very unpredictable the past few weeks in our area.  We have experience heavy rains in a short period of time causing the sewer systems to back up and streets to flood.

Call us today for more information or a free inspection (708) 239-1444

    Spring Home Project List

    3/8/2016 (Permalink)

Tackle those projects now so you can enjoy summer!

Spring is right around the corner! We have survived winter once again!

It is important to make sure your home is in good, safe working condition now so that you dont end up with bigger problems later.  Here are a few things you should tackle as the weather starts to get nicer and when summer finally comes, you can leave some time for fun!

    1. Get Your Roof Inspected  ~ Winter can be brutal on roofs, so now is the time to bring someone in to do a close inspection, so you can address any issues before they become problems.  A roof inspeciton includes a thorough look at the entire roof and opinions about the conditions of the flashing, shingles or tile, valleys, trim, etc.  The problems the inspector will look for include moisture or wind damage, leakage, staining and streaking from mold or mildew and loose flashing or seals.  The inspector will also give you a list of any maintenance needed as well as an estimate for the work.
    2. Check for Air Leaks and Seal Windows  ~ Drafty windows mean the AC will slip out and the hot summer air will slip in.  You want to get this problem solved before it gets too warm outside.  Make sure any caulking and weather stripping is intact.  You will want to pay attention to any windows that are exposed to snow, rain, or extreme sunlight.  This is also a good time to clean your windows inside and out.
    3. Get an Air Conditioning Tune-Up ~ Spring is the time to change the filter, check for proper refrigerant levels, clean evaporator and condenser coils, calibrate the condenser and oil motors if needed.  Air conditioning maintenance can help prevent small problems from becoming big problems and you will want to do it now as with the dog days of summer comes longer waits and higher prices.

None of this stuff will matter if you and your family are not safe.  After checking the other things, you should also check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as make sure the gauges on your fire extinguishers read 100 percent.  If you dont have a fire extinguisher, you can buy one at your local hardware store.  After you do so, make sure everyone in your family knows how to use it!

    Happy Spring!!
