SERVPRO of Orland Park proudly offers our fire damage restoration assistance 24/7 to every homeowner and business owner in the Orland Park community. We will help you recover faster and more efficiently

Our First Conversation
Our team will get started on your restoration plan from the very first phone call we have with you. We will identify the emergency contact and gather as much information as possible about the fire in question. We will ask how it started, how it was put out, where the flames spread and other clarifying questions so we know what equipment and materials to pack.

Once we arrive, we will first secure your home to prevent further damage from occurring while we are working. We will board up broken windows or tarp off sections of your home to protect your possessions and remaining walls from suffering more damage due to exposure to the elements.

Did you know that many homes that suffer fire damage also suffer water damage? While water is a reliable way to extinguish a fire, it can leave behind serious water damage as well.

Drying and Repairing

After we ensure that your home is secure and ready to be repaired, we will get moving by removing any excess water and by pulling out any damaged debris. We will travel from room to room to assess each space and make a restoration plan for each area.

We will even check out rooms that were never touched by the flames. Smoke and soot debris can travel to every room in your home, so we will remove odors and soot from every surface.

Up next comes a thorough cleaning! We will give your entire space a deep clean, and we will sanitize the whole area before we get started on the repairs. We even have special upholstery and fabric cleaning technicians that will help restore your  more fragile possessions.

Rebuilding Your Home

House fires are notorious for causing extensive structural damage, but we can handle any repairs that your home requires. This includes rebuilding entire rooms or sections of your home! If part of your home needs to be torn down first, we can handle that as well before we rebuild it.

We will work right alongside you to make sure your home is restored back to its pre-fire condition as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. We are always here for you!

Fire damage should always be cleaned up quickly. Contact SERVPRO of Orland Park right away.

Oak Forrest Smoke and Soot Cleanup

9/5/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Orland Park will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

We are here for you when fire damage strikes your Orland Park home or business

5/27/2022 (Permalink)

Cases where fire consumes everything in an Orland Park property, are rare, and there are numerous reasons for this since even a small fire has the potential to turn into a massive blaze. One reason is the reaction time and effort put in extinguishing the fire. Another reason is what fuels the fire once it starts. There are several other reasons so, in the end, each incident results in different types of damages. The different levels of damage might necessitate unique restorative action so involving a professional is a good idea.

Cases of fire damage in Orland Park fall into three levels – minor, medium, and major damage. At the minor level, most of the loss is from smoke residue. The deposits are also light to moderate in nature, so restoration mostly involves cleaning the affected surfaces. Our SERVPRO technicians can either use dry or wet cleaning techniques to get rid of the residues.

In medium level fire incidents, there is both smoke and heat damage on different surfaces and items, but it is moderate. Heat damage might affect cabinets, drywall, and other contents. Odors might also be more noticeable. Our SERVPRO team can help clean up and refinish surfaces. We clean contents at the job site too and carry out any necessary deodorization procedures eliminating traces of the fire “Like it never even happened.”

In fires categorized as major, heat damage is more severe especially in the areas close to the source. Such blazes leave parts of the structure such as framing charred, so part of the restoration process involves structural repairs. Smoke damage is also widespread reaching different sections of the property. Our SERVPRO team can help with the extensive cleanup and removal of debris from the structure. We also help board up the house or winterize it if the incident happens during the cold season. It is still possible to salvage some contents, but in most cases, they require extensive cleaning which we do offsite.

Proper restoration efforts can help restore your home to a preloss state. Call SERVPRO of Orland Park for assistance (708) 532-3377.

How To Help Reduce the Risk of Fire Injury If You Know Someone Who Is A Hoarder

5/16/2022 (Permalink)

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is a condition where a person has persistent difficulty discarding a large amount of personal possessions. These objects will cover the living areas of the home and cause significant distress.  Hoarding can prevent typical use of space and limit activities such as cooking, cleaning, moving through the house, and sleeping.  It could potentially put the individual and others at risk of causing fires, falling, poor sanitation and other concerns.

Increased Fire Risks

  • Cooking risks: if items are too close to the oven or stove, this can make cooking unsafe and start a fire.
  • Space heaters: when there are space heaters being used in the winter, they can tip or be too close to objects than can burn.
  • Electrical wiring:  may be old or worn and not obvious with all the clutter. If there are rodents that are getting into the home, they can also chew on this wire and cause damage which could start a fire.
  • Candles: open flames can be very dangerous in a home with excess clutter.

How Hoarding Impacts First Responders

  • Blocked exits: firefighters can get trapped if there are too many items blocking exit.
  • Excess weight: of the stored items may happen when water is added in trying to put out the fire. This may lead to the building collapsing.
  • Fighting fires is very risky in a hoarding home. It is hard to enter the home to provide medical care. The clutter can slow down the search and rescue of people and pets.

  • Help Reduce the Risk of Fire Injury

When talking to a person who hoards, focus on their safety rather than the clutter. Try to be empathetic and understand.

If you know someone in this situation, try to help them make a home safety plan so in the event of a fire, they can make a safe escape. Also try to install working smoke alarms in the home and test them once a month.

You can also try to reach out to their community fire department and let them know of your concerns. They may be able to refer you to someone that can help.

For more information on this topic you can visit the ADAA website.

SERVPRO of Orland Park has experience in cleaning hoarding homes. Hoarding is a specialty cleaning situation and many times involves some sort of bio-hazard situation. PPE is a must in these incidents and should not be completed by family members or friends. Call us today for more information 708-532-3377

Did You Know? SERVPRO Uses Sponges To Clean After A Fire!

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

Men Cleaning SERVPRO uses a special dry sponge on surfaces such as drywall.

Soot from fire damage should not initially be cleaned up with water.  SERVPRO uses a special dry sponge on surfaces such as drywall.   It is made of a natural rubber and used like an eraser.  Once the surface of the sponge is dirty, it has to be discarded and cannot be cleaned or reused.  The sponges are very porous and hold a remarkable amount of soot. After wiping the fine particles of the soot off the surface, then it can be wet washed.

There is no substitute for training and experience. As fire and water damage specialists, our business is built upon fire and water restoration expertise. We have the knowledge and the specialized equipment to get your property back to pre-fire condition.

Fire Our fire restoration services can help restore your home.

The fire in your basement fireplace did not destroy your property, but there are strong smoke odors and heavy soot residue on many furniture items as well as on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Contacting professionals for a job like this can help prevent further damage to your personal belongings and your home. We can restore your residence to its pre-fire state when possible.

Our certified technicians can use dry sponges to remove soot and ash from tables and other surfaces in the affected areas in the basement. If necessary, we may use cleaning solutions to remove dirt and residue from various surfaces like floors, walls, and ceilings. Burned contents such as curtains, clothing, and throw rugs can cause odors, which is why we remove them from the structure. With your permission, the crew can throw away all burnt items. The team can clean and sanitize any items we save and pack-out, categorize, label, and store them off-site until they finish restoring your home.

Removing charred furniture and cleaning surfaces may not always eliminate smoke odors. The techs may also have to utilize industrial-strength odor removal deodorizers to get rid of pungent smells from soft materials such as drapes, carpet, and upholstery. Thermal foggers can also be put to use to eradicate thick smoke aromas. It may become necessary to employ a portable ozone machine to neutralize and remove lingering smoke smells. If we use this piece of equipment, you must vacate the home until we complete the job. You can trust our crews to deem the air quality inside your property to be at a safe level before you return home.

Ask The Experts: What About The Smoke & Soot?

5/2/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke damage can often be one of the most widespread effects to contend with in your home after a fire disaster. While there are many other concerns, such as structural weaknesses that often take precedent for restoration and mitigation, restoring damage to your property should be a focus of whatever professional outfit you choose. Our team can arrive quickly to help lessen the damage and prolonged impact of a fire emergency, and work to eliminate the presence of smoke damage.

Smoke damage often depends on the type of smoke that affected your home throughout the fire. Dry smoke results from high heat, but is also a residue that is much easier for our SERVPRO technicians to clean with dry and wet sponges on the coated surfaces. Wet smoke leaves a thick residue on surfaces and contents, which often requires specialized equipment to clean and deodorize fully.  The heat generated by a house fire plays a key role in the actual penetration of soot particles into porous materials like drywall and fabrics.

Indoor air quality is also a primary focus for our SERVPRO professionals dispatched to your home once the first responders have left. We work quickly to establish our purification equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to run the available air through HEPA filters over time to begin pulling smoke particles and soot from the environment and reducing hazards or risks of exposure without respirators.

Smoke can provide many damaging effects after a fire emergency.  Our SERVPRO of Orland Park emergency response team has the expertise and tools to help.  Give us a call today (708) 532-3377.

Cleaning Smoke Residue After A Chimney Fire

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

If you have a fireplace in your Chicago residence, you need to take care of your chimney on a regular basis. A build-up of creosote along the lining walls of the chimney can facilitate the beginnings of a fire in your chimney. Such a build-up is created by unburned materials in the smoke accumulating on the walls of the chimney and making a sticky substance which can catch fire quickly.

Annual inspections and cleanings are therefore a must for your chimney in your Chicago home. If you have still experienced a chimney fire and fire damage to your home, you should give our professionals at SERVPRO a call as soon as the fire is out. We can help you to clean up the mess the fire left behind, including making any necessary repairs.

Each fire progresses through steps, putting out both dry and wet smoke. Some fires make a large enough proportion of one kind of smoke to characterize the whole exposure as predominately dry or wet smoke. We use different cleaning methods to remove the different residues. Usually, wet smoke is more challenging to remove. A chimney fire can quickly spread throughout your home fast, so we could be dealing with various surfaces that have been affected.

A few factors determine whether smoke residues are dry or wet, including the rate of combustion, the kind of material that is burning, and how much oxygen is present during the fire. In many fires, the more oxygen which is available, the faster the combustion process is. Fast-burning fires with plenty of oxygen produce a dry smoke, and slow-moving fires without much oxygen make wet smoke.

More materials are restorable in conditions with dry smoke. It carries few aerosols and deposits small, dry particles. It does not stain surfaces as deeply as wet smoke, and it has a less pungent odor. SERVPRO techs use less aggressive cleaning procedures in these cases, but dry smoke usually occurs from hotter fires, which do more damage.

Our restoration efforts are more involved with wet smoke residues. Usually, they contain a high proportion of aerosols like solvents, varnishes, and other liquid components. Since the fire is moving slowly, it has its time to work its way into crevices and enclosed areas that generally would not be contaminated by a fire that is fast-burning. Hot, oily residues discolor plastic materials within minutes.

Many times, contents exposed to a smoldering fire and wet smoke cannot be restored. Even stripping and refinishing may not prove enough. Aerosols in wet smoke can soften, penetrate, and stained surfaces and burning plastics and rubbers making large, black particles which smudge or smear.

No matter the type of smoke damage done by the fire, SERVPRO of Orland Park does our best to restore everything that is salvageable, and we make repairs when needed to get your home back to its original state.  Just give us a call at (708) 532-3377 if you have had a fire in your home.

SERVPRO Remedies The Effects From Smoke and Fire Damage

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

Almost all house fires cause smoke damage of some kind. Whether it is an isolated kitchen fire or a much larger one, SERVPRO almost always needs to treat smoke damage of some form in the aftermath of a fire. But not all materials are created equal, and some can harbor smoke much more readily than others. Knowing what materials do and don't have significant fire damage can help you to make an early guess on the costs and time that it may take to get your home smoke and damage-free.

Materials that Harbor Smoke Odors

Materials that are porous, such as fabric, wood, and grout, are those that take the most fire damage from smoke in Orland Park. These materials have pockets of spaces ranging from microscopic sizes to easily seen ones, inside which smoke particles can become lodged and prove difficult to remove. Even the tiniest pores in the wood are vulnerable, as smoke particles are often smaller than cells or microorganisms. These are the materials that SERVPRO brings out the heavy guns for, applying advanced area foggers to get into the deepest recesses. Other tools such as CO2-based deodorizers may be used to remove smells from a concentrated area. In cases where ash and smoke damage is severe, we may also apply specific and thorough cleaning processes to rid the object or surface of its smoke fully. It may be necessary to use a pressured CO2 pellet blasting to remove charred damage from raw wood such as garage ceilings.

Materials Resistant to Smoke

The most resistant materials to smoke damage include metal, stone, and plastic. These materials are for the most part solid throughout, providing few places for the smoke to latch on that cannot be quickly and easily washed. Note that for stone, cracks and molding materials can still be harbors for stray smoke particles. In some cases, laminated woods or smooth tiles can also give the same advantages, but it is much easier for these to be breached and deeply affected by the smoke.

SERVPRO of Orland Park is a locally-owned franchise with the tools and training necessary to fully rid your home of smoke and other signs of a fire. Call us anytime (708) 532-3377

SERVPRO Remediates All Types of Damage After a Fire

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

Candles are lovely for ambiance, and many people use scented candles to give off a pleasant aroma. They can also come in handy during a power outage. However, you need to use candles responsibly to avoid a fire in your Orland Park home. It is essential to keep the candle away from anything flammable, and not to leave it unattended at any time.

Sometimes, as careful as we are, candles still start home fires. Before you know it, you can be looking at severe fire damage in your Orland Park, which is when you need to call our professionals at SERVPRO for help. When the fire is out, we are the ones you can trust to clean and repair your home, so the fire looks "Like it never even happened."

Fires can result in varying ranges of damage, making each restoration project unique. With fire damage which is minor, only specific areas or rooms might be affected by smoke residues, and the smoke damage is not heavy. Our restoration services might involve dry or wet cleaning of walls, ceilings, floors, and your possessions. A few areas may need repainting, while only a few items need replacing.

When the fire damage is moderate, the smoke residues are as well, and more items need wet cleaning to eliminate residues. The areas that need repainting and the items that need replacing increase and floors might need refinishing. Heat damage to cabinets, drywall, and contents means more materials that need replacing. SERVPRO techs may be able to clean contents at the job site, and smoke odors are present and could need additional deodorization after cleaning.

When the fire has been more severe, heat and fire damage is worse at the source of the fire. Finishes and structural framing could be charred, resulting in repairs to the structure. Smoke residues are spread throughout a significant portion of your home, and odors are strong. We may need to board up your home, establishing a source of electricity, and take out any smoke-filled and charred debris. Our restoration services involve extensive cleaning of your structure and likely need restorers to pack and move any salvageable contents off-site for cleaning. We also use various methods for deodorization.

SERVPRO of Orland Park understands the different types of fire damage that is possible and we are prepared to handle them all.  Just give us a call (708) 532-3377 and we can help!

A clogged lint filter is the leading contributing factor in dryer fires. 34 percent of reported dryer fires is due to failing to clean out the lint trap according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

A good habit to get into is every time you unload the dryer, clean out the lint trap.  If you are putting a new load of wet clothes in the dryer, double check that the lint trap is clean to lower your risk of fire.  Clean filters also allow the dryer to run more efficiently, allowing your wet clothes to dry faster and preventing your machine from overheating.

INSPECT DRYER DUCTS REGULARLY

If the dryer vent or ducts are blocked, this can also cause a dryer fire.  Check your ducts once a month to ensure there are no blockages.  Blockages can come from an accumulation of lint, an animal that is nesting inside, or a snow buildup over the outside vent.

The Basics of Electrical Fire Damage

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

The professionals at SERVPRO of Orland Park can help you take care of your electrical fire.

Fire damage in your home or business can occur without warning.  Determining the extent of the loss is critical to planning the fire cleanup and restoration.  Identifying the source of the fire is necessary to understand what conditions were favorable to start the fire.  One of the most commonly overlooked causes is overloaded electrical receptacles.

Overcrowded electrical outlets can over burden the electrical circuit and set the stage for an electrical fire.  The most obvious sign of this is a power strip or outlet that has several cords plugged into it.  Although this might be convenient, this increases the chance of an electrical fire.  You should frequently inspect these and unplug what you are not using at the time.

Another concern that may be a warning sign is flickering lights or lights that appear to be dimmer than usual.  This can be a problem because many homeowners may think their light bulb is getting close to needing replacement.  This may also be a sign that the light bulb is reaching its maximum capacity, so it is important to monitor this to ensure electrical safety.  Homeowners should never make assumptions when it comes to electrical safety and the safety of those who reside in the home.

Grilling Safety Tips to Prevent Fires

7/13/2017 (Permalink)

When the warmer weather hits, there is nothing better than the smell of food on the grill.  According to the NFPA  three out of five households own a gas grill, which means there’s an increased risk of fires in homes.

Each year an average of 8,900 of home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all the injuries involving grills are due to thermal burns.

Even though nearly half the people who grill do it year round, most of the injuries happen in the month of July, followed by May, June and August.

Safety Tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Be sure to place your grill well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in the trays below the grill.

Tips For A Safe 4th of July

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Safest way to enjoy your 4th of July is to attend a show put on by professionals

The 4th of July is right around the corner.  Fireworks, backyard barbecues and maybe a trip to the beach.  Whatever you have planned, SERVPRO of Oak Lawn wants you to enjoy your holiday and we have a few tips for you to be safe.

Fireworks

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a fireworks show put on by professionals in your local area.  Make sure that you are at least 500 feet away from the show.  Most states have outlawed fireworks but if you are in a state that allows them, make sure you follow some of these safety tips:

  • Do not allow small children to light them and keep them away from any areas that people are using them
  • Keep a supply of water close by.
  • Be sure to store your fireworks in a cool place.
  • Never throw or point fireworks toward people, animals vehicles, or homes.

Grilling

  • Never leave a barbecue grill unattended.
  • Do not use one indoors or any enclosed area.
  • Keep pets and children away from grilling areas.
  • Use long-handled tools made for grilling to keep hands safe.

Have a safe and fun 4th of July!
