Worst Blizzard in Orland Park History: The Destructive Winter of 1967?

Our Orland Park team responds to storm damage emergencies every winter. The Great Blizzard of 1967 remains one of the worst snowstorms in Chicago’s history, bringing the city to a standstill and leaving behind extensive damage. On January 26 and 27, the storm dumped an unprecedented 23 inches of snow on the city, halting transportation, crippling infrastructure, and leaving residents to face the aftermath of frozen chaos.
The storm’s damage went far beyond snow-covered streets. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour created massive drifts, burying cars and homes. Thousands of stranded vehicles caused gridlock, and emergency services struggled to reach those in need. The weight of the snow caused roofs to collapse in homes and businesses, leading to structural damage throughout the area. Trees snapped under the pressure, bringing down power lines and leaving many neighborhoods without electricity for days.
The storm caused an estimated $150 million in damages (adjusted for inflation) and highlighted the need for improved snow removal and emergency preparedness in major urban centers. Chicago learned valuable lessons from the 1967 blizzard, leading to advancements in storm response plans.
Today, the storm is remembered for its devastating impact and Chicagoans' resilience in the face of extreme weather.
